Vision:

At Great Kingshill, our vision is for all pupils to develop a deep, conceptual understanding of mathematics. We believe that creating a lifelong confidence and love of applying and explaining mathematics will assist our pupils in connecting with the world around them.

A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. (National Curriculum 2014)

Intent:

Our intent is to provide pupils with a mathematics curriculum that will allow them to become confident individuals through developing their mathematical skills to their full potential. We also aim to present maths as a challenging, exciting, creative and relevant subject in order to promote a positive and confident attitude. In line with the National Curriculum (2014), our overall intent focuses on all pupils being able to:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
• solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Implementation:

The Power Maths scheme is used at Great Kingshill to support the aims and objectives of the national curriculum and ensure teaching and learning is sequenced appropriately. Power Maths follows the mastery approach and ensures a progressive and thorough curriculum in each year group. Teachers know which objectives must be taught and assessed in each year group and can follow progressive small steps to ensure pupils have a comprehensive understanding of maths. The Power Maths scheme is supplemented with other resources where necessary, for example White Rose, NCETM and other trusted resources to ensure teaching and learning opportunities are of high quality.

Teachers deliver one curriculum for all, providing opportunities to stay together and to work through new content as a whole group. This ensures pupils work through the curriculum at the same pace and do not create learning gaps. Pupils can be challenged with extra resources or use the Power Ups which are in the Power Maths scheme.

There are two subscriptions used at Great Kingshill to support pupils’s mathematical knowledge, these are TT Rockstars and Numbots. TT Rockstars is used from Y2 to Y6 to support their understanding of Timetables and it is introduced to Y1 in the Summer Term. Numbots is used in Reception and Y1 to support the pupils basic maths skills. Both resources are available for pupils to use both in school and at home.

We believe that pupils introduced to a concept, should build on their understanding by following a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.

• Concrete – Using mathematical objects to help pupils envisage what written numbers represent.
• Pictorial – Using pictures as representations to continue to support pupils in visualising what written numbers represent.
• Abstract – Using digits and words to represent numbers.

Power Maths supports and encourage the CPA approach and pupils will see a variety of resources used throughout the curriculum.
